The Beatniks

The Beatnik history can be traced back to the steamy coffee shops and poetry dens of Soho, in New York's Greenwich Village. Today, the Beatnik legacy lives on in four young men who adhere to the ideology that music is more than a mere background for our lives. They perform the music of the 60's & 70's (and 80's, too) with an energy and passion that you won't find anywhere else.

Live music has the unique ability to create a mood all its own, from the sophisticated charm of a string quartet to the adrenaline rush of a full band paying tribute to your favorite rock songs.

Although your investment in live music is generally two to three times the cost of DJ-mixed music, a killer band will almost always fill the dance floor until the proverbial house lights go out.

Things to Consider:

First, decide if music is a priority to you.  If you aren't planning on much dancing and don't have a preference between live music and recorded, cost will generally sway most couples to stick to a DJ.  However, if you love music and rank it as one of your priorities, investigate having musicians at your ceremony, reception, or both!  Mixing a harpist or string quartet for the ceremony and a band for the reception can create distinctive moods for each part of the day, while still creating a harmonized feeling (no pun intended!)

Second, decide the type of live music you would like.  Most artists can provide sample music to give you a feel for their work, and in some cases, you can even listen to tracks right on their websites.

Third, (and this is an important one) book live music EARLY in your planning process, particularly if you want a full band or dueling pianos.  As with photographers, the best artists tend to get booked many months or even years in advance.
