It's no secret that choreographed dancing is a huge trend right now. Turn on any network in primetime and you'll see celebrities and average folks learning to float around the ballroom floor. If you've ever dreamed of being on one of these shows (or even if you haven't) your opportunity comes when all eyes are on your first dance as a married couple.
Why not dazzle your guests with some amazing moves by attending a few hours of dance lessons? It may not be the first thing you think of when you agree to get married, but planning for your first dance will give you a great payoff in many ways:
- It's a sweet way to keep close to your fiance while planning the wedding.
- Commit to it in a major way, and you'll be working out together.
- Imagine the photos and video with dramatic dips and twirls!
- You get to find the perfect song together.
- You may find it's a hobby you want to stick with forever. (Probably not something to mention to your groom right off the bat, though!)
- Imagine doing the same dance at your 10, 25, and 50 year anniversaries ... so romantic!
When you decide to hire your professional instructor to whip you two into Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, decide on whether you want to do a traditional ballroom dance like a waltz or a foxtrot. Do you want to change into a kicky, short wedding dress and wow the guests with a swing dance? What about a sexy tango?
Everyone will learn at their own pace, but we recommend at least 3 - 5 hours of instruction spread over a few appointments for people to get really comfortable. Then, be sure to practice, practice, practice.
Here are a few tips to make the dance perfect on the big day:
- No need to perform a full ballet. Keep your song to about three minutes.
- If your choreography puts the end of your dance in a specific spot on the dancefloor or ends in a dramatic dip, let your photographer and videographer know ahead of time so that they can be ready for the shot!
- Make sure you give your DJ the song. If you're hiring a band, give them enough time to learn your song. Maybe as the day gets close you can practice together.
- Be sure to have a few run-throughs of the dance in the shoes each of you will be wearing.
The first dance is a moment to remember forever. Preparing for it ahead of time means you'll have the fondest memories possible!
