When booking your hair and makeup, don't leave it up to chance! You'll want someone you're comfortable with and whose results will fit your style and make you feel beautiful.

Hair:

The first step is to decide if you want a stylist who goes on-location the day of the wedding or one who works exclusively in-studio. Then choose a potential stylist and schedule a trial run. Load photos of hairstyles you like onto your phone or bring magazine clippings with you to your trial, as well as a photo of your dress. If you are using a veil or a headpiece bring it with you or let your hairstylist know so that he or she can create a style that compliments the accessory.

Always have the same stylist who will be helping you on your wedding day do the trial run, and take plenty of photos afterward so you can remember clearly what you did or did not like. Make sure to tuck the photos into your wedding bag or on your phone so you can have them on hand as reference for your stylist on the wedding day.

When choosing your hair style, also consider how it will look in photographs. Do you like photographs with your hair up, or do you prefer the way you look with it down? Your hairstyle should compliment your features, and your stylist should be able to help you find a look that makes you look fabulous. If in doubt, ask an honest friend!

Makeup:

Even if you are an expert at your daily makeup, a professional makeup artist is a must. Your regular daily makeup doesn't have to hold up through hours of photography, visibility from the altar, and occasional tears! A professional artist makes it all work, and can tailor your makeup to look amazing in the many types of lighting you will be in throughout the day.

Considering adding a touch of glamour to your look with eyelash extensions. Lush and full lashes create a dramatic but still natural look, and look amazing in photographs. Unless you are an expert, we strongly advise having them professionally applied, lest they come unglued halfway through the day!

As a rule of thumb, for makeup to look natural in photographs it should be about 40% heavier than you typically wear. Talk to your makeup artist and your photographer to refine your vision and create the look you will love. As with hair, we recommend doing a trial session to refine the look you want and taking photographs to serve as a reminder for the artist on the wedding day. You may want to schedule your makeup trial on the same day as your engagement pictures, which will help you look great for your session and give you a good idea of how it will look in photographs.

Nearly there tips:

  • A couple of weeks before the wedding, trim your hair. By the big day, it will be perfect. Don't be tempted to do something drastic, though!
  • A couple of days before the wedding, indulge in a manicure and pedicure. Think of all the times people will be looking at your hands to see your gorgeous ring. The pedicure will be a nice relaxation and a lovely touch for your honeymoon, and is perfect for peep-toe wedding shoes!
  • Never get a facial the week of the wedding. The cleansing process often will agitate your skin immediately following the facial, and it’s simply not worth the risk.

Wedding Day tips:

  • You may opt to have your stylist also assist the bridal party or family. If your artists will be assisting others (including mothers), be sure to build plenty of time into your wedding day schedule.
  • We recommend that anyone being professionally styled wears a button-down shirt. (After all, who wants to smudge their makeup and muss their hair by pulling a shirt off?)
  • Are you wearing a strapless gown? Skip the bra, skip the strap lines!
  • Always plan to have your hair and makeup done at least a half hour before photographs begin, so you don’t feel rushed and have a little buffer time in case your stylist is running behind.
  • For the finishing touch, ask your stylist for a touch-up kit or extra lipstick/gloss for refreshing your makeup throughout the day.
